Bonavita BV1800 – Simplicity Itself
The first thing that many people notice about the Bonavita BV1800 Coffee Maker is the fact that it doesn’t *look* like it would necessarily be the best coffee maker in the world. For starters, where are all the fancy glowing lights, the added dials, the automatic this and that (and that other thing)? With the BV1800, there is a distinct lack of bells and whistles.
A lot of coffee makers almost look like they could be drones – add some kind of propulsion unit to them and they would take off like UFOs and be getting views on YouTube.
Well, hopefully this won’t rock your world too much, but if you’re looking for that type of coffee maker with all the extras – this ain’t it. That said, they do put quite a few things in the Bonavita BV1800 box, but they are more like essentials than extras.
For controls? You get a total of one control, which is the on/off switch. Also, it isn’t a very big coffee maker so there isn’t a whole lot of extra room for additional things to be. Dimensions are: 13.2 x 8.7 x 14 inches ; 6.6 pounds.
Once You Hit That Button…
So, please note: once you start the brewing, there’s no stopping it. You need to let the Bonavita BV1800 do its thing and be finished with it before you can grab yourself a cup of coffee. Luckily, it does its job very quickly so you shant be waiting long.
Just remember what happened in Indiana Jones 3 when they had to guess which cup Jesus drank out of. Was it the fancy chalice, or was it the humble wooden bowl? Exactly – the Bonavita BV1800 here is your humble coffee maker, at your service, and will be by your side when some of your human companions abandon you – hey, its happened to this reviewer!
Best Water Temperature Control
So we’ve established that the Bonavita BV1800 isn’t jam packed with most features ever on a coffee maker. It was never destined to win that award. However, one thing that practically everyone who has purchased this coffee maker seems to agree on is its ability to use the perfect water temperature for brewing coffee. In fact, if you look at what coffee makers really do in terms of their main functions, controlling temperature of your water is one of the most important things a coffee maker should do exceptionally well – because if it doesn’t, your coffee will suffer accordingly. The Bonavita BV1800 excels at this, and this is why so many people adore it.
Because it gets the water temperature so spot-on when it comes to your brew, this, along with the Bonavita’s speedy brewing time, and its ability to produce hot and strong coffee has earned it the stamp of approval from the SCAA (Specialty Coffee Association of America), deeming this to be Certified Brewing Equipment. If you are ever shopping around for coffee gear, look for this seal. It doesn’t just get slapped on everything that comes along, so its worth noting that they decided that the Bonavita BV1800 is worthy of it.
Thermal Carafe Works Great
The carafe is one of the other great things about this coffee maker. The BV1800 is known for making good, strong, and HOT coffee and this carafe, with its thermal properties, is one of the big reasons why. It will keep your coffee hot for hours after you brew it, should you choose to let it sit that long. It has a great handle which is easy to manoeuvre and the lid seals firmly closed and is easy to pour with. Cleaning of the carafe is easy too, as you can get at the inside without any issues to clean it out by hand. If you go with the steel version of the carafe (there is also a glass version), don’t put the carafe in the dishwasher as it will break the seal. One more thing about the carafe is that it has never been known to alter the taste of the coffee, which is a good thing. Cheaper models will in fact affect the taste of your coffee, and usually not for the better!
Final Thoughts on the Bonavita BV1800 Coffee Maker
If you’re worried about the price of this machine, at around $125, just imagine that within a month of using it, it could pay for itself in the number of times some people visit their local coffee shop for a coffee or two per day. This is a long-lasting machine, and the majority of people do in fact love it, so it has earned all the praise it has gotten thus far.
The Bonavita BV1800 makes coffee fast and it makes it well, with little fuss. In terms of flaws, there really aren’t too many, but if we had to list one thing that people should look out for its the occasional spontaneously exploding glass inside your carafe.
Yes, you heard us right. Here and there, people have reported that they’d be wiping down their carafe and then they’d hear a pop, like a firecracker. That would be the glass exploding inside the carafe. We have yet to hear of anyone ever being injured by this, but just in case you want to read more about it, here’s a thread on the topic of this mystery. Why does it happen? Hard to say. People have reported that after years of loyal service – one day – boom!
Since this weird breaking glass phenomenon is relatively rare (1 in 1000?), and this unit is otherwise close to flawless in our opinion in every other respect, we must deduct one star just because of these odd reports. Otherwise, fantastic machine!
