Sonic Tributes To The Bean – 12 Songs About Coffee

Coffee gets us through the day.  Was there ever any doubt?  Coffee, for some of us, is like sex, food, sleep, or even love – it is a necessity and doing without is not an option!

Yes, and there have been some musicians who have gone so far as to have written entire songs about coffee.  Tender ballads, ditties, frisky instrumental romps, blues, pop…  There is a long list of songs inspired by and sometimes written exclusively about coffee.

Here we give you 12 classic songs (with lyrics) that span a variety of genres and take divine inspiration from our favorite and most beloved hot & dark beverages.

Some of these songs you may know, some you may not as they go way, way back.  Regardless, we think you will definitely enjoy, if not all, at least some of these coffee-related songs!

Kate Bush – Coffee Homeground

Lyrics:

Down in the cellar
You’re getting into making poison.
You slipped some on the side,
Into my glass of wine,
And I don’t want any coffee–homeground.

Offer me a chocolate,
No thank you, spoil my diet, know your game!
But tell me just how come
They smell of bitter almonds?
It’s a no-no to your coffee homeground.

Pictures of Crippin
Lipstick-smeared.
Torn wallpaper.
Have the walls got ears here?

Well, you won’t get me with your Belladonna–in the coffee,
And you won’t get me with your aresenic–in the pot of tea,
And you won’t get me in a hole to rot–with your hemlock
On the rocks.

Where are the plumbers
Who went a-missing here on Monday?
There was a tall man
With his companion,
And I bet you gave them coffee–homeground.

Maybe you’re lonely,
And only want a little company,
But keep your recipes
For the rats to eat,
And may they rest in peace with coffee homeground.

Well, you won’t get me with your Belladonna–in the coffee,
And you won’t get me with your aresenic–in the pot of tea,
And you won’t put me in a six-foot plot–with your hemlock
On the rocks.

You won’t get me with your Belladonna–in the coffee,
And you won’t get me with your aresenic–in the pot of tea,
And you won’t get me in a hole to rot–with your hemlock
On the rocks.

With your hemlock on the rocks.
“Noch ein Glas, mein Liebchen?”
With your hemlock on the rocks.
“Es schmeckt wunderbahr!”
With your hemlock on the rocks.
“Und ??”

Carroll Gibbons & His Boyfriends – Black Coffee

Instrumental

Descendents – Coffee Mug

Lyrics:

Mug mug mug
Coffee mug
Gonna clear the haze
Liquid proof
That I can win this race
Coffee mug
The grip that keeps me tall
My inter-link
Keeps me questing all
I don’t need no booze or drugs
I just chug-a-lug-o my coffee mug
And I don’t need no kiss and hug
I just chug-a-lug-o my coffee mug
They haven’t banned
My liquid drug of choice
There’s too many hooked
And they’ve got too much voice
So for the moment
We’re all pretty good to go
With 98 cups
With 98 more to go

Chorus
Here a bean, there a bean
Everywhere a mean mean
Bean Chug-a-lug-o, my
Coffe mug mug mug mug

Gordon Lightfoot – Second Cup Of Coffee

Lyrics:

I’m on my second cup of coffee and I still can’t face the day
I’m thinking of the lady who got lost along the way
And if I don’t stop this trembling hand from reaching for the phone
I’ll be reachin’ for the bottle, Lord, before this day is done

I’m on my second cup of coffee and I still can’t face the day
The room was filled with laughs as we danced the night away
But my sleep was filled with dreaming of the wrongs that I had done
And the gentle sweet reminder of a daughter and a son

Sitting alone, my friends have all gone home
You never know when they’ll come droppin’ in
Thinking of girls with their fingers in my curls
Too young to understand how love begins

I’m on my second cup of coffee and I still can’t face the dawn
The radio is playin’ a soft country song
And if I don’t stop this trembling hand from reaching for the phone
I’ll be reachin’ for the bottle, Lord, before this day is done

Mississippi John Hurt – Coffee Blues

Lyrics:

This is the ‘Coffee Blues’, I likes a certain brand
Maxwell’s House, it’s good till the last drop
Just like it says on the can, I used to have a girl
Cookin’ a good Maxwell House, she moved away
Some said to Memphis and some said to Leland

But I found her, I wanted her to cook me
Some good Maxwell’s House, you understand?
If I can get me just a spoonful of Maxwell’s House
Do me much good as two or three cups this other coffee

I’ve got to go to Memphis, bring her back to Leland
I wanna see my baby ’bout a lovin’ spoonful, my lovin’ spoonful
Well, I’m just got to have my lovin’, I found her

Good mornin’, baby, how you do this mornin’?
Well, please, ma’am, just a lovin’ spoon, just a lovin’ spoonful
I declare, I got to have my lovin’ spoonful
My baby packed her suitcase and she went away
I couldn’t let her stay for my lovin’, my lovin’ spoonful
Well, I’m just got to have my lovin’

Good mornin’, baby, how you do this mornin’?
Well, please, ma’am, just a lovin’ spoon, just a lovin’ spoonful
I declare, I got to have my lovin’ spoonful

Well, the preacher in the pulpit, jumpin’ up and down
He laid his Bible down for his lovin’
Ain’t Maxwell House all right?
Well, I’m just got to have my lovin’

The Ventures – Percolator

Instrumental

Bob Dylan – One More Cup Of Coffee

Lyrics:

Your breath is sweet
Your eyes are like two jewels in the sky
Your back is straight your hair is smooth
On the pillow where you lie
But I don’t sense affection
No gratitude or love
Your loyalty is not to me
But to the stars above

One more cup of coffee for the road
One more cup of coffee ‘fore I go.
To the valley below.

Your daddy he’s an outlaw
And a wanderer by trade
He’ll teach you how to pick and choose
And how to throw the blade
He oversees his kingdom
So no stranger does intrude
His voice it trembles as he calls out
For another plate of food.

One more cup of coffee for the road
One more cup of coffee ‘fore I go.
To the valley below.

Your sister sees the future
Like your mama and yourself
You’ve never learned to read or write
There’s no books upon your shelf
And your pleasure knows no limits
Your voice is like a meadowlark
But your heart is like an ocean
Mysterious and dark.

One more cup of coffee for the road
One more cup of coffee ‘fore I go.
To the valley below.

Blur – Coffee And TV

Lyrics:

Do you feel like a chain store?
Practically floored
One of many zeros
Kicked around bored
Your ears are full but you’re empty
Holding out your heart
To people who never really
Care how you are

So give me Coffee and TV
History
I’ve seen so much
I’m goin’ blind
And I’m brain-dead virtually
Sociability
It’s hard enough for me
Take me away from this big bad world
And agree to marry me
So we can start over again

Do you go to the country
It isn’t very far
There’s people there who will hurt you
‘Cause of who you are

Your ears are full of the language
There’s wisdom there you’re sure
‘Til the words start slurring
And you can’t find the door

So give me Coffee and TV
History
I’ve seen so much
I’m goin’ blind
And I’m brain-dead virtually
Sociability
It’s hard enough for me
Take me away from this big bad world
And agree to marry me
So we can start over again

So give me Coffee and TV
History
I’ve seen so much
I’m goin’ blind
And I’m brain-dead virtually
Sociability
It’s hard enough for me
Take me away from this big bad world
And agree to marry me
So we can start over again

Oh…we could start over again
Oh…we could start over again
Oh…we could start over again
Oh…we could start over again

Ella Fitzgerald – Black Coffee

Lyrics:

I’m feeling mighty lonesome
Haven’t slept a wink
I walk the floor and watch the door
And in between I drink
Black coffee
Love’s a hand me down brew
I’ll never know a Sunday
In this weekday room

I’m talking to the shadows
From 1 o’clock til 4
And lord, how slow the moments go
When all I do is pour
Black coffee
Since the blues caught my eye
I’m hanging out on Monday
My Sunday dreams to dry

Now a man is born to go a lovin’
A woman’s born to weep and fret
To stay at home and tend her oven
And drown her past regrets
In coffee and cigarettes

I’m moaning all the morning
And mourning all the night
And in between it’s nicotine
And not much heart to fight
Black coffee
Feelin’ low as the ground
It’s driving me crazy just waiting for my baby
To maybe come around… around
I’m waiting for my baby
To maybe come around

Frank Sinatra – The Coffee Song

Lyrics:

Way down among Brazilians
Coffee beans grow by the billions
So they’ve got to find those extra cups to fill
They’ve got an awful lot of coffee in Brazil

You can’t get cherry soda
’cause they’ve got to fill that quota
And the way things are I’ll bet they never will
They’ve got a zillion tons of coffee in Brazil

No tea or tomato juice
You’ll see no potato juice
’cause the planters down in Santos all say “No, no, no”

The politician’s daughter
Was accused of drinkin’ water
And was fined a great big fifty dollar bill
They’ve got an awful lot of coffee in Brazil

[instrumental break]

You date a girl and find out later
She smells just like a percolator
Her perfume was made right on the grill
Why, they could percolate the ocean in Brazil

And when their ham and eggs need savor
Coffee ketchup gives ’em flavor
Coffee pickles way outsell the dill
Why, they put coffee in the coffee in Brazil

No tea, no tomato juice
You’ll see no potato juice
The planters down in Santos all say “No, no, no”<<<

So you’ll add to the local color
Serving coffee with a cruller
Dunkin’ doesn’t take a lot of skill
They’ve got an awful lot of coffee
An awful lot of coffee
Man, they got a gang of coffee in Brazil!!

Todd Rundgren – Espresso (All Jacked Up!)

Lyrics:

We’re on the road again
Leavin’ our load behind us
Put a new message on the answer phone
That they can’t find us

The tickets are in my pocket
The shuttle is right on time
Everyone meets at the departure lounge
Half an hour we leave the ground

Let’s go get a hot espresso
Or maybe a cappuccino
Say get me a cafe latte
Make it with lots of chocolate in the middle of it

Let’s pull over
I need some magazines
There’s an attendant in the ladies room
If you’re not squeamish
Which side of the road to drive on?
Here everyone eats so fast
And what was that language that we spoke yesterday?
I made some change so I can pay

To get us some hot espresso
Or maybe a cappuccino
Would you like a cafe latte
Make it with lots of chocolate in the middle of it

Irish coffee
Sweet and sticky
English toffee
Plain and simple
Tea with honey
Top it off with ginseng royal jelly

In the morning it’s a bus to Barcelona
Fly a little side trip over to Roma
Then we all meet in Cannes, Nice, and Monaco
Then it’s Venice, Munich, London, San Francisco
Then we drive to Sante Fe and Austin
New Orleans, Atlanta, New York, Boston
Philadelphia, Cleveland Ohio
Columbus, Detroit, coffee stop Chicago
Then it’s L.A., Honolulu
Sidney, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Katmandu

And at the end of it all if god is willing
We’re sipping Turkish coffee in Greenwich Village

I need a hot espresso, I’m all jacked up!
I need a double espresso, I’m all jacked up!

Hot espresso
Fix me a cappuccino
How about a cafe latte
Make it one with lots of chocolate in the middle of it

Gimme one more hot espresso
Have another cappuccino
Fire me up a cafe latte
Sprinkle on that lots of chocolate in the middle of it

Hot espresso, I’m all jacked up!

Freedy Johnston – Coffee, Coffee, Coffee

Lyrics:

Some men drink alcohol
Some men drink juices from the vine
But as for me, I’m very simple
Give me coffee ev’ry time
Make it warm and make it sweet
Just the way my life has been
Give me coffee, coffee, coffee, coffee, coffee
And let me tell you, you have found yourself a friend

Cinncinnatti, early in the mornin’
Aah, waitin’ on an old Greyhound
For Macon, Georgia right around noon time
Ah, bring that coffee pot around
Make it hot and make it now
A little cream and sugar use
Give me coffee, coffee, coffee, coffee, coffee
And you have absolutely found yourself a friend

A cup of china, a silver spoon
Cream out of a golden can
See that pot, aah, it’s percolatin’
And it’s just like music from a band
These old bones, they’re tired and weary
But, man, you go percol up again
Give me coffee, coffee, coffee, coffee, coffee
I guarantee that you have have found yourself a friend

Yessir, you have found yourself a friend
I guarantee that you have have found yourself a friend
Ooohhh, you got yourself ……………..

There you have it!  And don’t think that there aren’t more coffee related songs because there are lots, but we had to simply pick our favorites.  Well, there’s only one thing to do after listening to those tracks.  Be right back!  🙂
