Now listen very carefully, we will say this only once, or maybe twice. There is a whole world of pain out there that has been created by coffee manufacturers, whom we sometimes think should be writing the script for the new Dallas or something, what with the re inventions, bastard off spring and secret twin siblings.
The universe that coffee makers inhabit is a deeply confusing one and there are several variations on the theme of this particular coffee maker, the Moccamaster KBT 10-Cup, which it may be prudent to take some note of, just to ensure you are buying the model you want.
There are, it seems, an entire clan of these Technivorm Moccamasters out there just waiting to entice you with their excellent coffee and baffling slight variations. The variations seem to be between whether they have an automatic brew stop or manual adjust one. Then some of the models have a glass carafe, which is not the one that is featured in our review, just so you know! That said, here is the slew of them if you want to see them all in one line up.
WHAT DO WE LIKE ABOUT THIS COFFEE MAKER?
THE TASTE, THE TASTE, THE TASTE!
This is surely the most important thing at the end of the day. The vast majority of people who bought the Technivorm Moccamaster KBT said, ultimately, despite any other misgivings they had about this model, that it made a damned fine cup of coffee. After that, we can forgive an awful lot. The taste is the first and foremost thing to consider when buying a coffee brewer, ultimately, and this one scores highly on that criteria.
Fortunately this is not the only thing we like about this model. But can we say it again, just to make sure – this coffee is good.
This thing is fast. It takes 4-6 minutes to brew up. That’s quick enough for us to get our caffeine hit on a morning, at least!
We know, some people think the opposite, but in doing this review we feel that the reverse is true and this just does what it says on the tin and makes really really great coffee without any fussy gimmicks, no flashing lights, no buttons reminding you when it’s time to change your undies or whatever it is you need technology to tell you to do next.
This thing only performs one task – it brews coffee and then keeps it nice and hot for a few hours whilst you potter about and get on with your life. You can even take the thermal carafe around with you and it will stay warm without the need for a hot plate underneath it. This is an advantage in our book and it should be in yours!
A five year guarantee is not something you see often on a coffee maker and it is a rare statement of confidence in the product, from the manufacturers, Technivorm. But just make sure you hang on to the proof of purchase.
Yes, this may seem a little of a strange one, but think about it. This has been manufactured in The Netherlands, so hopefully at least the people making it have been paid a living wage, unlike things made err elsewhere. Technivorm is known for *only* making coffee, and you can definitely taste that in the results.
ARE THERE ANY ISSUES WITH THIS COFFEE MAKER…. AND ARE THEY JUSTIFIED?
FLOW CONTROL LEVER
This does seem to be a minor design flaw with this model as it is a bit flimsy. However we would like to re-iterate that this still is only in a minority of cases.
TECHNIVORM CUSTOMER SERVICES
Just make damn sure you keep your receipt for your five year guarantee to be honored – put it somewhere safe, now!
Ah, the “it’s not hot enough” cry from the usual suspects complaining they’re not getting third degree burns from this coffee maker – but are the criticisms warranted?
Considering it brews at a consistent temperature of 197 – 205 degrees Fahrenheit and then sits in a thermos carafe, which will keep the temperature of the coffee constant for about two to three hours, we are not quite sure how it can be accused of not being hot enough, in all honesty!
Yes, the carafe might need a bit of advance warming with some hot water if that’s what you desire, but, hell, it should be hot enough!
IT’S A BIT FUSSY
Yes, with all the bits and pieces it maybe is not the most obvious or easiest thing to use and there have been a few dark mutterings about the design quality of the thing, but really, once you have the hang of it you will be away. And compared to some coffee makers it really is relatively simple. There are no ten million and one flashing lights or buttons on this, it is pretty much brew and go. We do feel the criticism it is ‘too difficult’ a little unfair really.
To be fair here, either you are looking around for a three hundred dollar (ish) coffee maker or you are not. If you are not, maybe you should simply err jog on. There are plenty of gripes about its less than economical price tag, some people expecting it to be gold plated or perhaps perform minor surgery for an encore whilst it’s lying idle. The thing is, this is the price, the issue is more whether it is value for money or not. Which overall, we feel it is.
SO SHOULD I BUY THE TECHNIVORM KBT MOCCAMASTER?
Ultimately, this is the question and the answer to it is a resounding YES. One or two minor issues aside, we can see no real or solid reason not to buy the Technivorm KBT.
All Technivorm do is to make coffeemakers and they have clearly perfected the art. Yes, you may wish to choose from the extended family of Moccamasters, as to which one you want – but they’re all good.
Also, whilst you’re about it, check out the Technivorm Moccamaster KM4 TT Grinder, which was designed to fit like a glove with the KBT 10 cup.
